Coal Oil Point Reserve’s CORE program offers paid internships to UCSB students, providing them with field experience, encouragement, and skills to envision a career in field sciences and become more competitive for jobs or graduate school.
The CORE group of interns will meet weekly to experience the range of work done at Coal Oil Point Reserve, focusing on areas such as conservation, restoration, and monitoring. Activities will include planting and propagating native species, measuring water quality parameters, observing wildlife using camera traps, binoculars, or cover boards, and utilizing apps to learn about native species identification.
Commitment: 3 hours per week. Meetings are on Fridays 9-12 AM.
Application deadline: Students may submit their application for Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters at least one month before the quarter in which they intend to participate. Decisions are made two weeks before the quarter’s start.
Eligibility: The CORE program is available for 3rd and 4th-year students only.
Application and more information: Download the Application Form and email it to copr.conservation@nrs.ucsb.edu

The CORE program also supports research that is reserve-based. The intern will conduct a research project at the reserve. The intern will learn to plan research, collect and analyze data, and write and present the findings. The reserve staff can be a mentor if the intern does not already have a faculty mentor. The program pays a stipend and materials for the research project. This internship is for a minimum of 3 hours per week, for 1-3 quarters, depending on the project. This internship can start at any time. Please contact the reserve director to discuss your project idea or learn more about potential projects.
The student may also be enrolled in a senior thesis simultaneously. The senior thesis process varies among departments at UC Santa Barbara. Please check with your department.
