Coal Oil Point Reserve’s CORE program provides paid internships to UCSB students to give them field experience, encouragement, and skills so they can envision a career in field sciences and be more competitive for a job or graduate school.
There are two CORE internship options:
COPR Program rotation. Experience the range of work done at Coal Oil Point Reserve in the areas of education, conservation, and restoration. The paid intern will spend 3-4 quarters in the various COPR programs (plover docent, restoration, tour guide, water quality monitoring, mammal monitoring), with a commitment of at least 3 hours per week. The application for this internship is announced each Fall.
Informational Flyer for 2024 CORE Internships – Application period for the 2024-2025 academic year is closed.
Reserve-based research. The intern conducts a research project at the reserve. The intern will learn to plan research, collect and analyze data, and write and present the findings. The reserve staff can be a mentor if the intern does not already have a faculty mentor. The program pays a stipend and materials for the research project. This internship is for a minimum of 3 hours per week, for 1-3 quarters, depending on the project. This internship can start at any time. Please contact the reserve director to discuss your project idea or learn more about potential projects.
The student may also be simultaneously enrolled in a senior thesis. The senior thesis process varies among departments at UC Santa Barbara. Please check with your department.
